The Power of Positive Childhood Experiences (PCEs): Research links PCEs to $216B of savings

Association of Positive Childhood Experiences with Health and Opportunity Outcomes in Four U.S. States

This cross-sectional study used Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance Survey (BRFSS) data from four states, analyzed in 2023-2024. Regression models of adult cohorts by PCE exposure and matched by demographic characteristics were used to assess associations between positive childhood experiences (PCEs) and current life opportunities, health risk behaviors, chronic health conditions, and overall physical and mental health.

This study builds off our 2019 "Positive Childhood Experiences and Adult Mental and Relational Health in a Statewide Sample" paper and once again showcases the powerful and lasting impact of early childhood experiences on lifelong health and opportunity. These findings act as a powerful reminder that if we want to build a healthier, more resilient society, we must prioritize caring for our nation’s children, through both policy and practice.
