The CAHMI uses the definition developed by the Maternal and Child Health Bureau (MCHB) to define CSHCN: "those who have a chronic physical, development, behavioral, or emotional condition and who also require health and related services of a type or amount beyond that required by children generally." The Children with Special Health Care Needs (CSHCN) Module, developed by the CAHMI, is a set of survey-based methods and tools designed to identify children with special health care needs and measure the basic aspects of health care quality for this population.
